Welcome

Kestrels - Year Five

Spring Term 2023

We are the Kestrels!

Key information:

  • We very strongly believe that ‘Team work makes the Dream work’ – we believe that if we work as a team – teacher / parent/carer and pupil – then your child will have a very positive learning experience and will succeed in becoming a ‘Ambitious, Capable Learner!’

  • We will ensure to provide a fun, engaging and inspiring curriculum, we ask that you the parent/carer support and encourage your child to have a resilient and can do attitude.  We ask the pupil to engage with a positive mind set and give 100% effort towards their learning.

Our topic this term is 'Viva Brynmenyn'.  We will be celebrating all things wonderful about ourselves, our school and our community.  We are looking at creating a piece of collaborative art with a graffiti artist to represent diversity and how we are unique.

Our Topic for this Spring Term is – Chemistry Kitchen. - based on pupil voice, our subject drivers are Science and Humanities.

We will start this topic with our Stunning Starter activity – Dexter’s Laboratory.

The pupils will have fun exploring and experimenting with a range of exciting investigations!

We will also be focusing on a Well-being enterprise during January

– The theme being – JOY for JANUARY!

After half term, we will be exploring, investigating and learning where our food comes from, how it grows and the arguments for and against being vegetarian/ pescatarian or vegan. We will be calculating the full cost implications of importing food and, weather permitting, looking at planting some of our own produce.

Literacy/Science – our Big writes will be linked to our science, we will be learning how to write explanations linked to our investigations. We will also be studying Industrial and Medieval Wales linked to celebrations for St David’s day.

Numeracy – we will be focusing on budgeting, planning and tracking money. This will help us to have a successful enterprise as we are hoping to make a profit and not a loss. We will also look at fractions, ratio and percentages.

Ways to help and support!

Ensure your child log ins to Active learn DAILY – there are 3 tasks for your child to complete.

  1. Individual reading books – selected for the appropriate level for your child
  2. Abacus – maths activities and games to support the focus of school lessons
  3. Spelling and Grammar – activities and games – supporting the Spelling lessons provided in school.

Learning times tables would also be very beneficial, this would support a number of topics in your child’s maths and numeracy lessons.

As always if there is anything you need to know or anything we can help with, please message on Class Dojos where we will reply with the support you require.

We really enjoyed being back in the hall together to celebrate our Eisteddfod this week, listening to welsh legends, singing welsh songs and celebrating with all the competition winners. Congratulations to our Bard of Brynmenyn, Rogan Tucker and two our runner up winners Olly Price and Niamh O Gorman.

We have had lots of fun this week joining in with some amazing World Book Day Live events with Scholastic.

Authors and illustrators have inspired us to get creative and draw our own manga inspired comic sketches and write our own fiction stories.

In Maths we have been learning about probability and ratio, using loom bands to help us was so much fun.

Our Literacy focus this week has been interesting. We have been listening to the many different viewpoints about whether we should eat less meat to save our planet.

We have been carrying out an investigation, collecting and analysing the data collected.

During our literacy lessons, we produced conclusions, ensuring we use scientific vocabulary.

This week we have been using our times table knowledge to solve doubling and halving activities.

During mission time we have been busy crafting a range of gifts ready for Enterprise event.
